BEST KNOWN FOR

Gauguin made Tahiti famous when he painted its people and captured its natural beauty, but you don’t have to be a legendary artist to appreciate the masterpiece that is this French Polynesian wonderland. Comprising five archipelagoes and 118 islands and atolls, the pristine white beaches, transparent blue water and tropical foliage appeal to the artist in everyone. Gorgeous lagoons filled with crystal blue water, a combination of French glamour and island mystery, and the famed Tahitian overwater bungalows, called fares, which often have glass-bottomed coffee tables for watching sea creatures.

DON’T MISS

Romance is effortless in this balmy nirvana. It’s the perfect place for an unstructured honeymoon: Chill out with the mesmerizing waterscapes. While in the fantasy world of Tahiti, dreams merge with reality. You’ll have the run of the beaches, easily discovering spots to call your own. Sunshine, beaches and sweet privacy add up to romance on all the islands, but if you’re looking for unabashed glamour as well, focus on Bora Bora. Some say Bora Bora is reminiscent of Hawaii some 50 years ago. For an off-the-map honeymoon, explore Raiatea, a romantic and remote atoll that claims some of the best snorkeling and diving. Raiatea’s luscious lagoon tempts you to wade out hundreds of feet.

BEST STAY

Set on a velvety-green motu (little island), Bora Bora Lagoon Resort in the middle of a stunning lagoon (just a short launch from the mainland), is Bora Bora’s piece de resistance. Guests stay in one of 37 over-water bungalow thatch-roofed structures perched on stilts. The interiors feature a lovely mix of mahogany, koa and coconut woods, and each has a custom-designed armoire with a TV and DVD unit surreptitiously tucked inside. Covered by an illuminated glass-topped coffee table, a rectangular hole in the floor opens to the sea below perfect for communing with the marine life. Be sure to order a canoe breakfast, where singing waiters and musicians paddle to your deck in an outrigger canoe filled with flowers to serve fresh pineapple and banana pancakes.
